Can I Paint My Fireplace Grate

Now that my fireplace was relatively clean i was ready to paint.

Can i paint my fireplace grate.

Note that the paint is not for use on kitchen stoves stove burner grates or steam radiators. Any gaps in the paper will get spray paint in it so take your time on this step. Two use high heat paint in a flat finish. I use fireplace black wax on mine.

Do not over apply as this may lead to runs and brushstrokes in the final finish. Don t be afraid to try adding a touch of color to your fireplace by coloring your grate. I taped off the carpet around the hearth and poured a small amount of white chalk paint into a solo cup. Remove ash with a fireplace shovel and broom.

Follow the directions on the back of your can but really you ll just want to shake it up vigorously and use light coats of spray paint on the interior. Use either a spray applicator or a brush to apply the paint. Two thin coats of the spray paint will more than cover the fireplace brass. Hide your hubby and kids.

I ended up doing 3 light coats and only waited a few minutes in between each per the instructions on the can. Using my small brush i proceeded to paint the grout lines. Grate paint comes in a variety of colors from reds to blues to the standard black. It will take you less than 1 minute for each coat.

I found that if i attempted this with my large brush i got too much paint on the bricks. Then crack a window. If you don t like it you can always add a second coat of black. A painted grate can t be used as a fire and is not authentic use a spray paint if you re not precious about getting the same colour as a wall or woodwork paint to help preserve the fireplace s detail.

You can use high temp paint made for fireplaces and grilles or engines. If you use them the paint should hold up pretty good and may just come off of the ends. Apply a light coat of galvanized metal etching primer to the metal fireplace using a 3 to 4 inch latex paintbrush. The best approach really is to clean the grates and understand that a little wear and tear are natural and do not generally impact performance.

Other applications include fireplace screens wood stoves boilers and steam pipes. It s time to paint the fireplace brass. Painting them can be a lot of work and could just result in flaking and chipping down the line which may be an even more unattractive and potentially unsafe problem to have. Scrape any ash on the walls of the firebox vacuum and then use damp old rags to wipe down the interior of the box.

Apply a metal primer on bare iron to avoid rust coming through the finishing coats.
